The Sounders FC, led by Fredy Montero, took home the Cascadia Cup Trophy tonight after defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1.
This is Seattle’s 3rd time winning the Cascadia Cup. The win also puts the Sounders back into 2nd place in the west. RSL lost for the first time in 6 matches against DC United. The LA Galaxy won, so we are still 7 points behind in the race for the Supporters Shield.
The Whitecaps jumped out to an early lead with a goal in the 19th minute, but it wasn’t long until the Sounders were right back in it.
Brad Evans found the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute. Then the second half was the Montero show.
In the 63rd minute Fredy showed some incredible footwork to get around 2 Whitecap defenders and put the ball “inch perfect” into the upper left corner of the goal(8).
Just 4 minutes later he blasted a shot from just beyond the 18 yard box, which took a deflection and found the upper right corner of the goal(9). Montero now leads the team with 9 MLS goals.
This game was packed full of offense. The Whitecaps were blasting shots and the Sounders were responding. The score easily could have been 7-4(in favor of the Sounders of course).
The Sounders hit the cross bar or post 3 times. In the first minute of the 2nd half Lamar Neagle’s laser of a shot hit the cross bar, then later in the game he had a shot glance off the post. Ochoa’s headers hit the post, and Jaqua had a header that missed the post by inches.
It was one of the best games of the season, high pace and tons of action. This win follows the news that the Sounders qualified for the playoffs due to a Sporting Kansas City vs Philadelphia Union draw.
