Sounders Win US Open Cup Championship – THREEPEAT!

SOUNDERS ARE THE U.S. OPEN CUP CHAMPIONS!

The Sounders beat the Chicago Fire tonight 2-0 in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Championship.

The victory is a threepeat for the Sounders FC.  The first MLS team and first team in 42 years to accomplish 3 US Open Cup Championships in 3 straight years!

More details to come (I gotta watch the trophy presentation)…

AND WERE BACK! It was a hard fought match tonight.  Chicago, who has been playing hot lately,  came to play.

Fredy MonteroThe match was scoreless through the first half although both teams were not without their chances.  It took the Sounders a little time to settle in but once they did they started to control the game and right before the half Fredy blasted a shot off the post that sent the crowd into hysterics and sent a message to the Fire.

The Second half was the Sounders Game.  We started piling on the shots.  From about the 75th to the 77th minute we had 5 or 6 great looks at goal, the final shot deflected out for the corner kick.  Friberg sent in the corner, Jeff Parke got a head on it, Sean Johnson made the save, but Fredy Montero found the rebound and put one in the back of the onion sack for the go ahead GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL!

Just minutes later Fredy put a brilliant ball over the defense to an advancing Mike Fucito.  MikeFu got pass the defense put a shot on goal and forced Sean Johnson to make another great save.  But when MikeFu watches the tape back he is going to see he had Brad Evans making a run down the middle of the 18 yard box, a soft left footed pass would have sealed the deal right then an there.

Osvaldo AlonsoInstead the Sounders had to keep battling through the next 20 minutes.

Finally regulation ended and the 4th official held up a stoppage time of 5 minutes.  FIVE MINUTES!  You could hear boos from the crowd.

But in the 96th minute Osvaldo Alonso put the exclamation mark on the match with a run through the defense that would have made Messi jealous. He moved the ball past 2 Fire defenders, into the penalty box, around the keeper plus 2 more defenders and finished it off with a soft touch into the back of the net.

At that point the Sounders were all smiles and just seconds after the remaining kick off the final whistle blew.

US Open Cup Final – Sounders to Make History

Tonight the Sounders FC take on the Chicago Fire in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Championship game.

The Sounders could make history tonight.  If they win they will be only the 4th team in the tournaments 98 year history to win 3 years in a row, and the first MLS team to ever accomplish that feat.   The threepeat has not happened in 42 years.

“To win three in a row is something that is special and unique and hasn’t been done in an awful long time,” head coach Sigi Schmid said.  “It’s huge for the organization.”

To accomplish that the Sounders have to get through the Chicago Fire.

I know what you are thinking… “Sweet… the Fire suck this year.”  That is what I thought initially too (and they do at 7-8-16) , but the Fire are playing hot right now (you know I thought about it as I was writing it, I still wrote it… so I’m leaving it… Stupid pun, but non the less a pun.)

A week before their draw against the Dynamo this last Saturday the Fire smoked (yes again) Real Salt Lake 3-0.  RSL has been our only loss in 8 MLS matches.  Given the RSL match was a complete mess, but they still handed us the loss.

Chicago is not to be taken lightly especially with so much to play for.  For what its worth the Sounders are 1-0-1 against the Fire this season, and 3-0-3 in all competitive matches since 2009.  Lets not let tonight be the first time Chicago beats us.

Even though the boys in Rave have just finished a 9,000 mile road trip many of the starters are rested from not playing on Saturday against the Revolution.

Big Question Mark: One big looming question is will Mauro Rosales be able to step onto the pitch and play tonight.  He was injured in the Sept 17th match vs DC United. The prognosis was out for 2-4 weeks so his return tonight is possible.  He is a game time decision.

I’m predicting a 3-1 victory and the Sounders FC will hoist up the Lamar Hunt Trophy for a 3rd time.

Kickoff is set for 7 pm at CenturyLink Field.  Catch it on TV at Fox Soccer Channel and locally on the radio on 97.3 KIRO FM.

SFC Advances to US Open Cup Finals, 1-0 Win over Dallas

The Sounders FC are absolutely lights out Starfire and in the US Open Cup.

With their 1-0 victory over FC Dallas last night the Sounders advance to the US Open Cup Finals for the 3rd year in row. Never has the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup been won three times in a row by an MLS team.

The boys played an incredible first half against FC Dallas giving themselves many opportunities to find the back of the net. It was in the 40th minute, just a couple minutes after he narrowly missed a bicycle kick shot from about 7 or 8 yards, that Fredy Montero curled a left footer around the FC Dallas goal keeper into the net.

The second half had Sounders fans on edge as FC Dallas found their stride and nearly leveled it on many occasions. Our defense held strong and we came out with the win.

The Sounders will host the Chicago Fire, who beat the Richmond Kickers of the USL Pro League, on October 4th 7pm at Century Link Field for the US Open Cup Championship Game.

The Chicago Fire are a struggling team this year with only 4 MLS wins, but they know how to win the US Open Cup. They have lifted trophy 4 times, more than any other MLS squad.

Mike Fucito Injury Update: Late in the Game Mike Fucito took a nasty elbow to the face. He had blood running down his face and the images are quite disturbing. Luckily all Fucito needed was about 7 stitches and he is alright.

Sounders Destroy Crew w/ Neagle Hat Trick – US Open Cup Tonight

The Sounders absolutely destroyed the Columbus crew on Saturday.

The final score was 6-2. Lamar Neagle not only had his first goal at Century Link field, but he had a hat trick. The third of Lamars goal was absolutely incredible. He was also named MLS player of the week.

Rosales, along with 2 assists, found the back of the net on a penalty kick and good old Mike Fucito got his first MLS goal of the year. Mike is playing hot right now. The 6th goal was an own goal by Columbus. When it rains it pours on Columbus, and it tends to rain a lot on them when they play the Sounders FC.

The win brings us within 3 of the LA Galaxy who’s game this week vs the Red Bulls was postponed due to Hurricane Irene.

Tonight the Sounders face off with FC Dallas in the Semifinals of the US Open Cup. This is a huge game for the Sounders because if we win we have a chance for the 3-peat of the US Open Cup Championship. A win also means the Final will be played at C-Link field against either the Richmond Kickers of the USL PRO League, or the Chicago Fire.

Not to say that tonight is essentially the championship game, but lets be honest, right now the Chicago Fire have 4 MLS wins and the 5th worst MLS Record and the Richmond Kickers are a USL Pro League team. Either one of these teams playing in Seattle vs the Souners FC don’t fair very well. The Sounders are one of the hottest Futbol teams in the Americas and if we get through FC Dallas tonight its 3 times in a row for the US Open Cup.

The Sounders Move on To US Open Cup Semifinals

Last night the Sounders sailed through the LA Galaxy in their quarter final US Open Cup match with a 3-1 victory. They are on a quest to win the US Open cup for a record 3rd time in a row!

The LA Galaxy have always caused troubles for the Sounders, but the Sounders, undefeated at Starfire in Tukwila where the match was played, made beating the LA Galaxy look easy.

In just the 7th minute Nate Jaqua found the back of the net, then less than 20 minutes later Fredy Montero put one in to give the Sounders a 2-0 lead.

The Galaxy ended up scoring, but Lamar Neagle put the game out of reach with a late goal.

Whats next in the US Open Cup?

Next the Sounders FC will face FC Dallas on August 30th at Starfire for the Semifinal match.

The Sounders currently sit atop the ESPN Power Rankings with FC Dallas #2. Should be a great match.

Once we get through FC Dallas we are on the defend the title again!
