Well, the Sounders Came Close.

I’ve been out of town, unable to blog, since Thursday but I have to comment on the last match of the season.

I have not been so jittery watching a football match since Team USA defeated Algeria in the world cup with the stoppage time miracle.

The Sounders put themselves in every position possible to bring the game level and send it into extra time. With 30 minutes left on the clock we had 2 goals and ALL the momentum in the game.

But it just wasn’t to be. The 3 goal deficit was too much to over come. They sure did make it exciting though! The final aggregate score was 3-2 in favor of RSL.

What a great season it has been for the Sounders with such a disappointing ending. How do I know its disappointing? In our poll, which only 14 people responded too (which is okay because the point is still made) 0 of you said making the playoffs meant a successful season. 4 of you said winning the first round would mean a successful season. 4 of you said making the finals would be good enough to qualify as a success, and 6 of you said we need to win it all.

Sounders Need at least 4 to Top RSL. Can They?

On Saturday the Sounders buckled at Rio Tinto Stadium losing the first of their aggregate playoff matches to Real Salt Lake 0-3. The first time they have lost by more than 2 goals.

To be quite honest the game for the Sounders was pretty pathetic. You have to look back to week 1 and 2 since they have played so poorly and the new found sucking could not have come at a worse time.

Since coming into the league the Sounders have set record after record. For their first three seasons they have been a force in the MLS, but the one thing that has plagued this organization is the playoffs. We have yet to make it past the first round and as it looks now all signs point to the same this season.

There is a shred of hope on the horizon. The Sounders, although down, are not out of this match, and because this is a two match playoff system (which is a dumb playoff system anyway) they have a chance to make one of the greatest comebacks in MLS history. They will need at least 4 goals to advance to the conference championship round.

Lets take a look back at the season…

How many times have the Sounders topped a team by 4 goals?

The answer… 1… ouch!

On August 27th at home the Sounders FC defeated the Columbus Crew 6-2.

But!!! There is another way to look at this. All the Sounders need in regulation is to win by 3. The match will be settled on Wednesday night even if it has to go to a shoot out. So 3 in regulation would send them into overtime.

How many times have the won by 3 goals?

The boys in rave green have won by three 4 times this season in all competitive matches. The wins came against Toronto, Comunicaciones, DC United and the Crew.

They need to win regulation by 3 goals. Head into overtime with the momentum and finish off RSL for the greatest playoff comeback in MLS history.

Its a long shot… but its the only hope we have.

Update on Rosales Knee Injury 10-25

Mauro Rosales was again at the training field at Starfire during the Sounders FC’s regular training session. He jogged with the team in their warm-up, rode a stationary bike for a brief time, then jogged again with a trainer. While those facts may not be partiularly optimistic for a Saturday return from Seattle’s assist-leader, head coach Sigi Schmid left the door open for a possiblie return on Satruday, though Wednesda at CenturyLink Field for the second leg seemed more likely.

“The MRI showed that he re-injured the MCL a little bit, so we want him to lay low for sure these next few days and then we’ll take it day by day after that,” Schmid said. “Again, we’ve got to let it calm down and then we can see how it proceeds from there. For this weekend it’s probably iffy. For Wednesday, we’ll see.”

The Sounders have Wednesday off. More information about Rosales can be expected on Thursday.

What do you guys think? Should we rest him and trust we can get through RSL without him, then hopefully have him back to face (most likely) the LA Galaxy? Or would you like to see him on the pitch this Saturday?

UPDATE Thursday 10-26:

After a day off Wednesday, the Sounders FC returned to the training ground at Starfire on Thursday with an eye on their meeting with Real Salt Lake on Saturday.

That also meant Mauro Rosales was back, too. He didn’t participate in full, but did ride a stationary bike, walk and jog as he nears recovery from an injured knee suffereed on Saturday in the opening minutes ofa 3-1 win over Chivas USA.

“They did this thing called a platelet injection, which helps the healing process, but it causes soreness for a couple of days,” Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid explained. “The expectation today was that he would ride the bike and walk a little bit and he was actually jogging. That’s good, so we’ll see how he progresses.”

Sounders Win Finale and Playoffs are Set

The Sounders ended the season on Saturday with a great win against Chivas USA. The final tally was 3-1 in favor of the Sounders, but it didn’t come without another gut wrenching moment when in the 5th minute Mauro Rosales left the game with another knee injury.

The extent of the injury is unknown at this point, but when the Sounders release the news we will let you know. The injury comes on Mauro’s first start since his previous knee injury he suffered 4 matches ago vs DC United.

The Big question is will we have him for the playoffs. Let’s hope so.

To the rest of the game… the scoring got started with an own goal by Chivas USA. Fernandez found the back of the net with a brilliant shot, and Sammy Ochoa’s diving header from a Fredy Montero cross finished off the scoring for the Sounders. Fredy’s cross to Ochoa was perfect and Ochoa’s header found the 5 hole of the Chivas USA keeper.

It was a great match and keep the winning moment moving right into the playoffs.

Playoffs Set

The Boys in Rave Green finished off the season with a 18-7-9 record and 63 points, a new franchise record, and are in 2nd place in the west. This means the Sounders will face the 3rd place finisher in the west Real Salt Lake.

The Sounders are 1-1-0 against RSL this season. The win coming in RSL stadium and the loss coming at home.

The Sounders have to play through the Western conference which is a much more difficult road to get to the finals than through the eastern conference. Once they get through RSL they will most likely face the LA Galaxy unless LA are upset by the lowest seeded wildcard team in their first match.

But first things first… we need to get through RSL this Saturday the 29th at 7:00 pm. The match is an aggregate match which means they will play one game at RSL Stadium and another game here at home. The most goals from the 2 matches wins.

With a match home and away it may not seem like there is much home field advantage, but consider if the 2nd match at C-Link field ends and the combined score is tied. The overtime and potential penalty kick shoot out will be on our home turf and that is what you want.

The first match will be televised on the Fox Soccer channel and the tickets to go to the home match are on sale now. The home match is on Wednesday Nov. 2nd.
